Brief History of Jade Emperor Pagoda
Jade Emperor Pagoda was built in 1909 by Luu Minh, a Chinese immigrant to Vietnam. The pagoda worships the Jade Emperor (known as the supreme deity in Taoism), along with Buddas and other revered figures from Chinese mythology.
Between 1943 and 1986, the pagoda underwent four restoration projects, ensuring the preservation of its architectural and artistic integrity. In 1994, the Jade Emperor Pagoda was recognized as an Artistic and Architectural Site of National Significance. Then, the pagoda received a special honor with a visit from the President of the United States, Barack Obama, in 2016.
Today, the Jade Emperor Pagoda attracts thousands of visitors every month, especially on special occasions.
The Architecture
The architecture of the Jade Emperor Pagoda is a harmonious fusion of Chinese and Vietnamese influences.
Throughout the temple, you can see ancient-style elements such as curved roofs, exquisite patterns, old-fashioned materials, and vibrant colors. The Jade Emperor Pagoda is divided into different areas and rooms with distinct features.
Main Entrance
The outside wall of the pagoda is painted a vibrant pink hue, while the entrance gate is flanked by two stone pillars intricately carved with red Chinese characters. Above the gate, a curved roof is adorned with two stone dragons competing for a pearl.
Main Hall
Inside the main building, there are two especially fierce and menacing Taoist figures: one general who defeated the Green Dragon and one general who defeated the White Tiger.
Behind the main hall is the chamber worshiping the Jade Emperor and his guardians. A mass of worshippers gathered here to pray for luck and health.
Stepping into other rooms, you will see many statues of deities in Chinese mythology. Notably, infertile couples often offer prayers before the shrines of Kim Hoa Thanh Mau (god in charge of childbirth) and twelve midwives.
Over 300 statues at the pagoda are mainly made of wood, the rest are made of papier mâché. The pagoda is considered the only pagoda in Vietnam, with ancient papier-mâché statues vividly depicting the meeting of the gods in heaven.
The Ten Courts of Hell Area
On the left-hand side of the Jade Emperor’s room is the shrine of Thanh Hoang — the Chief of Hell. In this room, there are many figures of gods who dispense punishments for wrongdoings and rewards for good deeds.
Also, it contains the famous Hall of the Ten Hells. The carved wooden panels illustrate the different torments awaiting evildoers in each of the Ten Regions of Hell.
The Outside (Garden and Courtyards)
Outside of the pagoda, there are lots of trees for visitors to enjoy the refreshing and peaceful atmosphere.
Right in the middle of the courtyard, there is a fish tank about 50 square meters wide, with many different types of fish. Adjacent to it, on the right-hand side, is a turtle tank where worshippers release turtles as part of their prayers.

If you want to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and admire the intricate architecture, the early morning is a good time. If you like the vibrant ambiance and explore religious events, the full moon days or pagoda festival days are the best time to visit the Jade Emperor temple.
